BECOMING JANE

The year is 1795. Jane Austen is the younger daughter of Reverend Austen and his wife, and she has to find a suitable husband. She wants to be a writer and marry for love but her mother and her father dislike this idea. Jane lives with her brothers and sisters and one of her sisters, Cassandra, is engaged to Mr. Fowle. One of her brothers, George, is deaf, and he communicates with Jane in sign language. They have a rich widow cousin Eliza de Feuillide.
Far away in London, Tom Lefroy is a promising lawyer with a bad reputation, which he describes as "typical" for lawyers. Tom’s uncle, the Lord Chief Judge Langlois of London, wants to change this conduct and sends Tom to live in the country with his relatives, the Lefroys. He is totally unhappy with the idea.
Jane and Tom meet at the Austen’s, but she cannot stand the arrogant Irishman. She turns down the affections of numerous men, including Mr Wisley, the nephew of a rich aristocrat Lady Gresham. Mr. Wisley proposes, but Jane rejects his proposal. Tom and Jane meet at several ball parties, which were an important social event at that time. Tom Lefroy continues his advances and Jane begins to take the idea of marriage seriously. The two get to know each other gradually, however, and eventually fall in love.
Tom, Jane, Henry and Jane's cousin, Eliza the Comtessa, conspire to receive an invitation from Tom's uncle, the Lord Chief Judge Langlois of London, for the rich "Madame de La Comtessa", and her friends to take a short trip to London to see Jane's brother, Edward. This would allow Tom's uncle and benefactor, Judge Langlois, to get to know Jane and give a blessing for their marriage. However, the Judge receives a letter informing him of Jane's poor family, he refuses to give Tom his blessing. Tom insists that he and Jane must marry, as he put it, "I will never give you up." If they attempt to marry, they will risk everything that matters - family, friends and fortune. They plan to elope and start a new life together, but something unexpected will appear between them.
