DINING IN THE DARK
It may sound strange, but at the “Unsicht-bar” in Berlin, diners eat with the lights off and the curtains closed. This is dining in the dark, a new way to experience your food!
Without their sight, diners rely on their senses of touch and hearing to find their table. They use smell and taste to recognize what they have ordered, which can be difficult. In fact, many diners are not sure what they are having for dinner!
In the darkness, even simple things become difficult, like pouring a glass of water. “Put your fingers in the glass,” advises a waitress, “when it starts to feel wet, then you know the glass is full.” Food might smell and taste good, but you don’t know whether it looks good. “It makes you concentrate on the flavours,” explains 21-year-old Abdul, “because you can’t judge by appearances.”
