Après mai (Something In The Air)
Media:
After the premiere of On the road that spoke of the Beat Generation, a French production, which shows us how our neighbouring country was three years after May 68, arrives to our screens.
The film is directed by Oliver Assayas. Although his gaze has lost some of his youthful enthusiasm and has given way to some scepticism and a certain melancholy, it will be in Gilles, the young protagonist, where we will find some parts of life and personality of the director himself.
There is neither Manichaeism nor idealization of a generation, but rather the representation of both its success and mistakes.
Gilles, along with a group of high school fellows, leads a movement that clashes with the prevailing capitalist system in order to change a society they consider being unfair.
As the film progresses, this social claim dilutes and the protagonist returns disappointed, stops being a revolutionary and starts searching for his own way and his place in the world.
Assayas gives us a double reading of the facts: on one hand the struggles and the claims of a maverick group and, on the other hand, the encounters of the young protagonist with his own self and the things which really mean something to him.
At the movie, which star young dreamers, it will not be difficult to find some characters that are similar to today's youth.
