Here again, we have Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke nine years later. They are closing the trilogy that we were expecting so much. This time, the backdrop for the meeting of this unforgettable couple, who are in their forties, will be a beautiful Greek landscape. They have aged as their characters, and the fact of taking an active part in the writing of the script gives the story a great deal of credibility. In some way, they are performing themselves.
From the second scene, when they are going by car to the house where they are staying, we can see that it will not be a story of sugar and honey. Their discrepancies are obvious, but a feeling of love and tenderness always underlies them. In the following scenes, the company of some friends will cushion the outbreak of a crisis that the audience senses.
We have to wait until the final scenes, when the characters are alone in a hotel room. Then, they start a battery of reproaches; blaming each other for the failure of their marriage and trying to make clear who of them has sacrificed the most for the sake of the relationship.
He, who does not always show his feelings in the way she would like but still loves her unconditionally, will be in charge of breaking the spell of a timeless romance. He will make her clear the reality of a relationship that is rich enough to survive the everyday challenges.
Although their conversations reflect some melancholy by those early beginnings, they also convey some sort of passionate maturity. Then we recognize that love only completes its cycle when time passes, and the couple moreover accept their rough edges.
Let's hope that, in the future, these characters can show us the nightfall of their love as well!
