Once again an acclaimed actor decides to work behind the camera. He does not hesitate to deal with difficulty and accepts the challenge of adapting a Shakespeare play at the present Rome. Starting from an excellent cast and largely respecting the original text, the result is that Ralph Fiennes knows how to deal with the direction.
Caius Martius represents the soldier who wants the best for Rome and only lives for war. Both his lack of tact and somewhat dismissive attitude of people spoil their attempt to reach the senate as a consul. His political enemies maneuver to confront him with the populace.
His only exit is exile, and from there he will organize an army with their former enemies. All the rage, hatred and courage he had previously shown to fight for Rome will be now unleashed against it, and so he will take vengeance. Only the influence of his mother will come between him and his goal.
Despite the centuries that separate it from the original text, this current drama speaks of those who give their lives for a cause and are doomed to loneliness, of political confrontation, of how all this leads to family dramas and of the manipulation of people. Everything seems the existing social situation. The density of style and the constant use of rhetoric sometimes make it look a speech class where the viewer has, at times, the feeling of a discrepancy between aesthetics and style. Listening to Shakespeare surrounded by machine guns, highways and characters in tracksuits and sporting shoes weaken the nobility of these roles created for theatre stages.
There is a superb performance by Vanessa Redgrave who manages to convey the grandeur of her character without artifice or affectation. Unnoticed Jessica Chastain, who proved to be capable of leading the entire plot of a film herself in "Zero Dark Thirty".
