Female Teachers of the Spanish Republic Premier.

This documentary by Pilar Perez was the winner of the 2014 Spanish Goya Award for best documentary film. Through archival footage, interviews with relatives and the re-creation of that time by using the performance of an actress in the role of a teacher, it shows the work the female republican teachers did in the classroom. Their aim was to update the Spanish education system and consolidate that a quality public education system could reach all social classes. They were convinced that if they could alphabetize the country it would inevitably improve the social situation.
Researchers and specialists in the field intersperse their comments on the various aspects these teachers achieved to transform with documents and pictures of the time.
These women, committed themselves to gender equality, occupied leadership positions in schools and unions. Their greatest commitment took place in the classrooms where they established a more participatory and active learning and where they gave priority to equality, freedom and solidarity above all things.
Seen as a whole, we miss a less biased view on the subject, more objectivity and listen to other voices and different ideologies. This lack of historical perspective leads us to see this interesting topic that a wide audience deserves to know, as a simple pamphlet.
Although the documentation provided at the film is very valuable, the re-creation of the republican teacher with her eternal smile of satisfaction and happiness seems highly implausible and a little absurd.
