Grandma. A comedy that talks about key subjects
Media:
Paul Weitz is one of those directors who are gradually forging a reputation in the film world. Without leaving comedy, but far away from the emptiness of American Pie, Grandma surprises us for being an honest, intelligent and mature bet.
Elle is a renowned poet who has just broken up with her girlfriend. Her rough, rebellious character and, at the time, her great sense of humor keep her away from social stereotypes. When Sage, her teenage granddaughter, visits her and asks for money to have an abortion, Elle does not hesitate to help her. Then grandmother and granddaughter begin a tour of Elle's friends and former partners just to collect the amount Sage needs. The different situations that these characters spark off will help us discover the past of the protagonist and her eccentric and funny personality.
Sage, whose stressed mother has no time for her, will be present at the provocations and challenges that her grandmother is spreading wherever she goes. While the complicity and affection between both women will go adding to.
The film raises such interesting topics as the relationship between mothers and daughters, granddaughters and grandmothers. It also speaks about key subjects as abortion and the consequent male response, acceptance of lesbianism, and difficulties that reunion with old relationships cause.
It would be unfair not to highlight the great cast, especially the magnificent performance of Lily Tomlin. The entire burden of the story falls on her shoulders. Although her flamboyant personality loses some strength in the last scenes, she can be a future candidate for an Oscar.
