Here And There, a film between documentary and fiction

Here and There is a low-budget production between documentary and fiction, a clear, genuine movie that uses no tricks to impress the audience, has a certain natural beauty and is made with an immense deal of dignity. Despite being actors making their debut in cinema, we are so moved by the naturalness of the performance that there is no need of music to convey emotion. Just their words, gestures and silences make the story look real and believable as life itself.
The film starts from the drama of migration and its impact on a family. Antonio Mendez Esparza, the director shows us how things are at a village in Sierra Guerrero (Mexico) through different facets: health, education, work and social relationships. His purpose is not analyzing the precarious social situation the characters have to face, but to make us the spectators of their everyday lives so that the audience can draw their own conclusions.
Pedro returns home after years of working in the USA. He comes with the hope of finding a good job to support his family. These hopes gradually will fade as he only finds temporary jobs and money is becoming scarce. His frustrating everyday struggle only compensates for the genuine affection that he finds in his family. Despite the lack of means, they always know how to find a smile and a moment of happiness in the smallest details. However, the fear of a new separation and return to the USA will always be hanging over their lives.
Among others, the film has won the Fipresci Award of the Critics' Week in Cannes.
