INTERVIEW WITH RAMA BURSHTEIN, DIRECTOR OF FILL THE VOID
Media:
Rama Burshtein, director of Fill The Void is an affable, smiling person who is willing to listen to. Although her clothing, according to her Jewish religion, is far from our one, she seems to be extremely close and warm. One of her great merits lies in that for the first time in the history of cinema, she has made a film where she shows, from the inside and simply but effectively, the rites and customs of the Orthodox Jewish community settled in Tel Aviv, whose precepts and strict rules are governed by the Torah. This subject will be the one of the objectives of Rama's film: to show us how a Hasidic family faces a problem, makes decisions and resolves the conflict.
The starting point of the film is a story of grief and love. Shira (Hadas Yaron) is a young girl who has to deal with a difficult situation despite her age. Her older sister has died giving birth and her mother, to be close to the grandson, asks Shira to marry her brother-in-law. So, she will be in the dilemma of having to give up a young man she is in love and raising a family with a man who is much older than her. At the same time, she will have to assume the responsibility of becoming mother of her nephew.
Emotional and inspiring story where we should not seek a review of the Hasidic community but trying to understand that there are feelings which are common to any human being, regardless of culture or religion they have.
