Snowden, or how defenseless we are before power

Media:

"Secrets are Safety and Safety is Victory." This is the reasoning that Edward Snowden was given when he discovered the spying work that NSA was doing. Oliver Stone, a director who likes showing the darkest side of politics, found the perfect material for his film in this young man, a person who believed in the system but suffered a deep disappointment in front of the harsh reality. Citizenfour, Laura Poitras' documentary about Snowden, serves as the epicenter of Stone's film. Without going into valuing which one is better, we can highlight two aspects of this new film about Snowden: Firstly, it is a fictional story, and it results in a closer and more charming story for the audience. Secondly, one of the threads of the plot is the relationship that Snowden had with her girlfriend that provides an emotional tone to the whole story.

In 2003, Edward Snowden left his job in a company and joined the US Special Forces. An accident let him away from the army, but his high capacity for computer gave him a job at the NSA and CIA. His profession provided access to insider information on the secret and global monitoring program that the National Security Agency has. That is, the intimacy of each one of us is in the hands of a government that claims to ensure global security. Snowden disagreed with this espionage policy and using only 4 laptops, one USB pen and a Rubik's Cube, he decided to make public the secret documents that prove the massive USA electronic spying. So, for the government of his country, he becomes the most wanted man. He currently lives in Russia and says he is willing to face trial if it is fair and open.

With his movie, Oliver Stone would like to help Snowden being forgiven in his country. We do not know whether his dream will be fulfilled, but he demonstrates a mastery of narrative and ability to build a didactic story. We have to make a special mention to the magnificent performance by Joseph Gordon-Levitt who deserved the applause of the Snowden himself.
