The Kid. Action, Intrigue and Drama at the Strait of Gibraltar

Director Daniel Monzón has set the bar high with his new movie, and the end result is one of the best thrillers in Spanish cinema. For those who have watched Gomorra, based on the book by Roberto Saviano, many scenes of The Kid will transport them to that Matteo Garrone's film.
Using action, intrigue and drama, the basis on which The Kid lays, the film denounces how the Strait of Gibraltar has become a major drug route into Europe. Two stories, torn by the conflicting reality, are perfectly assembled and conducted by an intelligent and impeccably woven script. On the one hand, we have a cop who has been working to dismantle a drug trafficking network for two years. He does not think to relent in his efforts even at the expense of risking his own life. On the other hand, there are two young people who see a way to earn quick and easy money by trafficking in hashish from Morocco to Spain. For doing that they contact a Moroccan fellow who has worked for a famous capo and knows these circles very well. These two stories are well balanced and present a world ruled by betrayal and violence. They both run parallel and converge at the end showing, without any concessions, a realistic portrait of the two sides of the Strait.
According to the director, The Kid is the product of the real experiences told by characters from both sides. And here the actors have great merit, because they manage to create believable and superbly played characters, even in those scenes which remind us the most genuine North American cinema.
