Words and Pictures. A Controversial Relationship Between Two Teachers
Media:
It is necessary to quote the original title (Words and Pictures) because I think that it explains more accurately the main plot. In contrast, it is very unfortunate the title of the premiere in Spain that seems to focus only on the foreseeable end of the film.
Is a picture worth a thousand words? Is there more power in a word than in a picture? These subjects will carry Jack Marcus (Clive Owen), a professor of language and Dina Delsanto (Juliette Binoche), an art teacher, to a healthy competition that will gradually attract students and teachers attention. These two characters, victims of a great loneliness, have found a fragile refuge in aesthetics.
Now, the constant puns, literary quotations and references to paintings will let Marcus break his monotonous life and overcome his alcoholism. While Dina, who sees how his vocation as a painter is diminishing day by day, will do an effort to get over the trauma of her rheumatoid arthritis.
Among them, a constant challenge will start the day after day. The struggle will be so strong that they will decide to organize a final contest with the aim of establishing a winner.
Although it has a too happy, easy and sweet ending, this romantic comedy is delightful for all those who believe in the power of the artistic work. The conclusion will be entirely correct: word and image are not able to exist without the other. They complement each other since the first relates to precision and reasoning, whereas the image is the queen of suggestion and emotion.
